            04.04.2024 – A Day on the Waves

Published by Paula Thake on April 10, 2024

Embarking on a marine adventure is often a dance with nature, where the rhythm of the waves dictates the sightings of the day. Today, aboard the vessels Ribeira Brava and Stenella, we were surprised.

Throughout the day, both boats encountered different marine species, offering a glimpse into the dynamic life beneath the waves. Ribeira Brava welcomed the spirited leaps of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and the playful antics of Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in the afternoon, while Stenella witnessed the sleek forms of Short-beaked common dolphins during midday and was later graced by the appearance of Bottlenose dolphins in the late afternoon.

Despite the absence of sightings during certain periods, the day’s journey served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters.

Weather conditions, ocean currents, and the ever-shifting dynamics of marine life all play a role in shaping our experiences on the water. Yet, it is precisely this unpredictability that adds to the allure of marine exploration, instilling a sense of humility and wonder in the face of nature’s grandeur.

As we reflect on the day’s sightings, it becomes evident that every excursion into the ocean is a unique one, offering glimpses into a world filled with life and wonders. Whether we’re graced with sightings or left to marvel at the vastness of the sea, each moment spent in it becomes a testament of the wonders of marine exploration.
