Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) are currently filling our tours with the most incredible sightings both below and above the waters surface! Known to the Portuguese as golfinho pintado, this charismatic small species visits the islands waters during the warmer months of the year. Encounters with spotted dolphins are never short of entertaining! During our snorkelling trips they curiously approach our guests and chatter amongst one another as they glide alongside us in the water. At the surface they belong to the most acrobatic of all dolphins, breaching and leaping as they socialise under the summer sun.
Being the curious creatures that they are, spotted also happen to be extremely photogenic and belong to the most photographed species during our tours. Curious behaviour and a placid ocean make an unbeatable combination for all avid nature photographers out there! Todays group of spotted in the morning was rather small but, nonetheless, the animals fearlessly approached our snorkelers (who all behaved magnificently in the water) giving both guests and crew the opportunity of getting some snapshots of the encounter. During the afternoon tour the animals were frolicking in larger groups at the surface, with some of the more mature animals accompanying small calves near the centre of the group. It simply never gets boring with our pintados!
