            13.04.2024 – A Day of Discovery

Published by Paula Thake on April 20, 2024

Today, Madeira unveiled a treasure trove of marine wonders, captivating all who were fortunate enough to witness its magic. Among the highlights were the playful Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), the ethereal Man O’ War (Physalia physalis), and the astonishing Atlantic Flying Fish (Cheilopogon melanurus). Meet more about them in this blog!

Bottlenose Dolphins are charismatic creatures are known for their playful antics, often leaping out of the water and riding the waves with sheer exuberance. Did you know that Bottlenose Dolphins are incredibly intelligent? They have complex social structures and are even capable of using tools, making them one of the most fascinating species in the ocean.

On the other hand, Man O’ War despite its name, the Man O’ War is not a jellyfish but a colony of organisms working together in perfect harmony. Its striking appearance with its vibrant blue float and long tentacles makes it a sight to behold. While beautiful, the Man O’ War’s tentacles deliver a painful sting, so it’s best admired from a safe distance!

Finally the amazing Atlantic Flying Fish are remarkable fish that have adapted to glide above the water’s surface, using their specially shaped fins to soar through the air for long distances. Their ability to “fly” allows them to evade predators and cover vast distances with remarkable agility—a true marvel of evolution!

As we marveled at these incredible sightings, we were reminded of the boundless wonders that lie beneath the surface of the ocean. So here’s to Madeira, a sanctuary of natural splendor, where each day brings new discoveries and moments of wonder. May we continue to cherish and protect our oceans, ensuring that future generations can experience the same sense of awe and appreciation for the marine world. Until next time, let’s keep our eyes on the horizon, ready to embrace the magic that awaits us.
