            02.08.2026 – Large headed

Published by Gemma Stockmans on August 9, 2026

Today was another unforgettable day on the Atlantic, with calm seas, excellent conditions, and fantastic wildlife encounters on all of our trips. We were lucky enough to spot sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) on both our morning and afternoon tours.

The scientific name Physeter macrocephalus means “large-headed blower,” a perfect description of these incredible animals, which have the largest brain of any creature on Earth.

Sperm whales communicate using powerful clicking sounds called codas. These clicks help them find prey through echolocation and stay in contact with other whales. Different family groups even have their own unique patterns of clicks, almost like regional dialects.

Seeing these magnificent giants twice in one day made for another truly memorable day on the Atlantic, and we can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
