Who keeps amazing us? The Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), our cute, happy, interactive summer dolphins!
This morning we encountered a large school of 100+ animals spread over a large area. As we approached, we could already see Cory’s Shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea) very active flying through the skies. So what happened before we arrived in the sighting area? The Atlantic spotted dolphins seemed to have filled their bellies. Good for us, because now they had time for a curious approach. To the delight of our guests, they checked us out and surfed in the bow wave of the boat. A very nice encounter.
It wasn’t easy in the afternoon. We set out to find the morning’s large pod of Atlantic spotted dolphins. But it soon turned out that our best bet was to turn back and find the Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris). This was actually exactly the right decision. Thanks to the gentle, responsible approach of our captain, we had a nice encounter with these otherwise shy Beaked whales. During our search, we also spotted four Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta).
