This morning it was a while before we had an encounter with marine mammals. That’s how it is sometimes at sea, it takes patience. Meanwhile, our guests enjoyed the pleasant ride on our beautiful, traditional fishing boat and let themselves be rocked comfortably by the gentle swell. A beautiful Portuguese ma-o-war floated like a mysterious sailor on the surface of the sea, reflected in the brilliant blue.
Amidst the tranquil encounter with the group of Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris), a guest found the right words for this small, tranquil whale species: slow motion whales. That’s how they were today, gliding through the sea in slow motion. The male stayed closest to our boat. If you look closely at the photo of the male, you’ll see that barnacles have settled around his tusks.
In the afternoon we found a completely reverse situation on the sea. The wind picked up in no time, white foam caps and wild waves were waiting for us. However, the Short-beaked Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) were also extremely active. They shot through the waves, flew through the air, danced in the bow wave of the Ribeira Brava and dynamically chased their fishy morsels. So the afternoon was more under the motto: time-lapse.
