Today’s sightings off the stunning coast of Madeira have left us exhilarated as we welcomed a delightful new member to the resident group of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiups truncatus)! The star of the show is none other than the adorable calf playfully swimming alongside its mother. The heartwarming sight brought smiles to the faces of everyone fortunate enough to witness it.
Bottlenose dolphins, are a charismatic species known for their intelligence and social nature. The birth of a new calf is a significant event, as it not only contributes to the population’s conservation but also symbolizes the thriving health of the local marine ecosystem.
But that’s not all the ocean had in store for us today. Throughout the day, our lucky observers enjoyed sightings of another fascinating species, the Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis). These mesmerising creatures showcased their vibrant patterns as they gracefully leaped and frolicked in the crystal-clear waters. As we immersed ourselves in to their hunting situation we were able to spot not one but two loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) just sunbathing at the surface of the ocean, but as soon as they saw us they dived in to the deepness of the Atlantic.
As if the dolphins’ playful presence weren’t enough, a special surprise awaited us in the form of Sowerby’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon bidens). Although we saw them for just a couple of minutes these elusive beaked whales added an extra touch of wonder to an already extraordinary day of wildlife viewing.
Such sightings serve as a poignant reminder of the rich biodiversity that calls the waters of Madeira home. The island’s commitment to conservation efforts and responsible tourism plays a vital role in ensuring the protection of these magnificent marine creatures and their habitats for generations to come.
As the sun sets on this unforgettable day, we carry with us cherished memories of witnessing the magic of nature at its finest. Welcoming the baby Bottlenose dolphin, affectionately nicknamed “Stenellis” by some of us in the tour, has marked a heartening moment for all of us who care deeply about the well-being of these majestic beings. Let us continue to appreciate, respect, and safeguard the wonders that the ocean graciously bestows upon us.
