Even with this grey weather, dolphins never fail to give our guests all the feels! Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) are especially joyful to encounter; their colourful flank pattern along with their curious nature make them an absolute pleasure to observe in the wild. Ancient civilisations would agree; the species is abundant in ancient greek and roman stories and decorates many of the art pieces of the time. Common dolphins are living proof that dolphins have fascinated humans since time immemorial.
Modern day fascination for dolphins, particularly in terms of research, has revolved around another species of dolphin, the Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). This is mainly due to the species intelligence and their adaptive nature which has lead to a worldwide distribution, putting them into frequent contact with people living on the coastline and seafarers. Bottlenose dolphins are also the most frequently kept marine mammal in captivity, enabling scientists to learn more about the animals at the expense of the animals freedom and dignity.
Experiencing them in the wild is absolutely magical. Today the pod was socialising close to shore, with animals tossing and turning at the surface and sneaking quick glimpses at us as they swam by the Stenella. Needless to say, our guests were absolutely thrilled at the concoction of fun and colour on this cloudy day.
