In the morning only our traditional fishing boat, the Ribeira Brava went out on ocean exploration. While most of the time, our fast Zodiak goes out to scout first and help put with locating animals, today it was only the Spotter and us. The sea seemed like a liquid desert this morning, no animals, no birds.. The only thing our Spotter found was Sperm Whales (Physeter macrocephalus) 10 miles out of Calheta. And so this was us on a long journey to visit those beautiful giants. Not our luckiest day.. After we made it to the sighting area and observed a few blows and turns, the whale decided to shallow dive and abandoned us. Long travel back.. I still hope everyone enjoyed to get a little insight into the Sperm Whale world. In the evening we managed to encounter another deep diver that feeds on Squid – the beautiful Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus). And because this dolphin only has two to three pair on tooth in their lower jaw, the choosing Squid as their prey is very convenient for this species.
We finished our day with a big and playful pod of Atlantic Spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) that our luckily still around..
