As is often the case at the moment, a large group of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were waiting for us directly in front of the harbor. Some of them seemed to be in the throes of love. There were some marvelous leaps. Jumps serve different purposes. They are used for communication or for practical reasons. In today’s case, it looked very much like display behavior.
However, a school of Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) discovered by our spotter was in no mood to make contact with us. We can make an attempt to interact with the marine mammals, but ultimately it is up to them whether they want to. Their choice must be accepted. That is what respectful observation of these animals is all about.
Sargasso seaweed floated on the sea, having arrived here after a long journey from the Sargasso Sea, which lies north of Florida.
