18.08.2026 – Dolphins from Funchal

Today’s trips were all about Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), and what a day it was! Our guests were treated to some fantastic encounters as these energetic dolphins travelled alongside the boat, raced through the waves and played together across the open Atlantic.

Atlantic spotted dolphins are highly social animals and are often seen in groups that can vary enormously in size. Sometimes we encounter just a handful of dolphins, while on other days, several groups come together to create impressive gatherings of dozens — or even hundreds — of individuals.

Today was definitely one of those days!

One of our younger guests came up with the perfect explanation for the sheer number of dolphins we saw: “It must be all the dolphins from Funchal!” And honestly, after seeing so many dolphins throughout the day, it certainly felt that way!

Watching such a large number of dolphins travelling together, surfacing, playing and interacting with one another was an incredible experience. Their energy seemed endless, and it was impossible not to smile as they moved effortlessly through the waves.

Every encounter with wildlife is different, but today’s dolphin-filled trips gave our guests a truly special glimpse into the fascinating social world of Atlantic spotted dolphins.

A day with this many dolphins is definitely one we won’t forget anytime soon!
