Despite the difficult weather conditions, we headed out to sea today in search of marine mammals. Our spotter showed remarkable consistency and was able to locate a group of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in these adverse conditions.
Bottlenose dolphins communicate with each other using a variety of sounds, including clicks, whistles and grunts. These forms of communication are crucial to their social bonding and hunting strategies. In addition, they use echolocation to locate their prey and orientate themselves in their environment.
The Sargassum seagrass, which we also saw, is rich in nutrients and provides habitat and shelter for many young sea creatures. The dense mats serve as hiding places from predatory species while providing food and shelter for a variety of organisms during their early life stages.
Despite the challenging weather conditions, our excursion was a success.
