NECROPSIA

Auf dem Rückweg einer unserer Fahrten Ende Oktober 2014 erweckten diese weiss gekleideten Menschen unsere Aufmerksamkeit. Wir fuhren näher heran und es stellte sich heraus, dass es Biologen des Walmuseums waren, die eine Nekropsie durchführten. 

On the way back of one of our trips end of October 2014, these white-dressed men aroused our attention. We got closer and it turned out that they were biologists from the whale museum who conducted a necropsy.Der Begriff Nekropsie stammt aus dem griechischen, abgeleitet von nekrós (tod) und opsis (Blick, Anschauung) und wird in der Regel bei Tieren verwendet. Wie bei der Autopsie von Menschen soll bei einer Nekropsie die Todesursache des Tiers herausgefunden werden.

The term comes from the Greek necropsy derived from nekros (death) undopsis (view, intuition) and is typically used in animals. As with the autopsy of people the cause of death of the animal is to be found at necropsy .

Dieser Große Tümmler ist einer von 9, die im Jahre 2014 tot aufgefunden wurden. Einige trieben an der Wasseroberfläche, andere wurden an Land gespült. Bei 5 dieser Säuger hat das Walmuseum eine Nekropsie durchgeführt. Die Todesursache war in loki nicht ersichtig und daher wurde eine weitere Untersuchung beim Veterinärsamt gemacht aus der höchstwahrscheinlich eine Infektion als Todesursache  hervorging. Sicher ist das Geschlecht, es war ein Männchen, aber das genaue Alter konnte nicht festgestellt werden. Wir wissen aber, dass es sich um ein schon erwachsenes Tier handelte. Die Abgleichung mit dem Katalog der residenten Großen Tümmler (Tiere, die in den Gewässern um Madeira den größten Teil ihres Lebens verbringen) ist noch nicht erfolgt. Auf Grund seiner Größe von ca. 3,2 m und der Tatsache, dass seine Haut wenige Striemen und Narben aufwies, kann man davon ausgehen, dass er zu einer ozeanischen Schule gehörte, die an Madeira nur vorbeigezogen ist.

This bottlenose dolphin is one of 9 that were found dead in 2014, some came to shore, some were found dead floating at the surface. In 5 of the mammals the Whale Museum has conducted a necropsy . The cause of death was not discovered in loki and therefore, further investigation were made ​​at the Veterinary Office and the cause of the death was an infection. Sure we are about the sex of the animal, it was a male, but the exact age could not be confirmed. But we know that it was already an adult animal. And till now it has not yet been compared with the catalog of resident bottlenose dolphins (animals that spend most of their life in the waters around Madeira). Due to its size of about 3.2 m , and the fact that its skin had only a few bruises and scars , it can be assumed that these bottlenose dolphin belonged to an oceanic pod, which only passed by Madeira island.

Übrigens wird das Skelett dieses Meeressäugers vielleicht noch dieses Jahr seinen Platz in der Ausstellung im Walmuseum in Caniçal finden. 

By the way, the skeleton of these sea mammal might find its place in the exhibition at the Whaling Museum in Caniçal, maybe even still this year.
