As we enter the winter season, the absence of some marine life becomes more noticeable. The Cory’s shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) have moved further South as have the main pods of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) and at this time of the year sea temperature drops to 20 degrees. We observed about 40 animals on board the RIBEIRA BRAVA today, a mixture of Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), all around the vessel engaged in social behavior. Small calves rolling around their older family members, perhaps in an effort to suckle and start the winter strong. Either way a great start to the colder season at sea!
