            13.06.2026 – Patience

Published by Gemma Stockmans on June 20, 2026
Some days on the ocean remind us just how unpredictable and rewarding wildlife watching can be, and today was certainly one of those special days.
The morning began under calm skies as we headed out onto the beautiful waters surrounding Madeira. Spirits were high, and it didn’t take long before our first exciting encounter of the day appeared. A magnificent Bryde’s whale (Balaenoptera edeni) surfaced nearby, offering everyone on board incredible views of this elegant giant.
As if that wasn’t enough, the excitement continued when a lively group of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) joined us. These energetic dolphins delighted everyone with their playful behaviour, swimming alongside the boat and occasionally leaping from the water. Their distinctive spotted patterns shimmered beneath the surface as they moved effortlessly through the crystal-clear sea.
After a successful morning, we returned to shore with smiles all around. But the adventure was far from over.
In the afternoon, we set sail once again, this time aboard the original Madeira fisher boat. The traditional vessel provided a unique and authentic experience, allowing guests to enjoy the coastline and open ocean from a different perspective. The trip required patience and determination as we travelled further offshore in search of wildlife.
After a long journey across the Atlantic waters, our persistence paid off. In the distance, we spotted a small school of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). These bottlenose dolphins were rather shy, keeping their distance and surfacing quietly before disappearing beneath the waves. Although they were more reserved, their appearance felt especially rewarding after the long search.
Every trip is different, and that’s what makes whale and dolphin watching so special. Today was a perfect example of the surprises the Atlantic can offer and a day that will surely remain in the memories of all who joined us.
