            27.01-2024 – Unplanned afternoon adventure

Published by Paula Thake on February 3, 2024

The morning began with anticipation as our eager group gathered for a 9:30 am marine wildlife tour, filled with excitement and hopes of encountering the majestic Striped dolphins (Stenella coreuleoalba) and the playful Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis).

However, nature had other plans, and our morning tour was unfortunately canceled. Undeterred, we regrouped at 3 pm, determined to make the most of the day. Little did we know that this setback would lead to one of the most exhilarating wildlife experiences we’ve ever had.

As our vessel sliced through the azure waters off the coast of Madeira, we suddenly found ourselves in the midst of a hunting spectacle. The Common dolphins showcased their incredible agility, skillfully capturing fish with breathtaking precision. Our cameras clicked away, capturing the mesmerizing moment when these dolphins indulged in their aquatic feast.

Just when we thought the day couldn’t get any better, a surprise awaited us. The elusive Striped dolphins, made an unexpected appearance. The entire crew erupted in excitement as these stunning creatures gracefully danced through the waves, their distinctive colored stripes added a touch of magic to the scene.

What made this day even more special was the presence of two couples who had previously joined me on other tours. Their trust in Lobosondas’ ethical approach to wildlife encounters and their appreciation for our dedicated efforts meant the world to me. It was a heartwarming reminder of the connections forged through shared admiration for marine life.

This extraordinary encounter prompted a moment of reflection on the importance of marine wildlife protection in Madeira. As we marveled at these intelligent and playful creatures, the responsibility to preserve their natural habitats became even more apparent. Lobosonda is committed to promoting awareness and advocating for the conservation of these magnificent species, ensuring that future generations can continue to witness the beauty of the ocean’s inhabitants.

In the end, our unplanned afternoon adventure turned into a symphony of oceanic marvels, leaving us with memories that will undoubtedly linger in our hearts.
