            26.08.2020 – Support

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on September 2, 2020

Smooth seas, sunshine and marine mammals sum up the day perfectly. Today the dolphins were not long in coming. On our morning tour we met a group of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). To see these imposing dolphins sliding powerfully and serenely in the bow wave of Ribeira Brava is impressive. Observing the huge group of the Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) in the same activity is a completely different experience. They are lively and nimble. The sea seemed to boil from the amount of Spotted dolphins today.

The Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), which we could see exhaling in the distance, was preparing for a dive and disappeared into the deep blue before we reached it.

Cetacean are known for their cohesion and support. There are many examples where humpback whales protect seals against shark or Orca attacks. Dolphins are known to hold sick members of the group to breathe on the surface. Great support! Many examples are known where marine mammals helped humans. Today there was a person to person support on board. After realizing my camera’s battery was low and the spare battery was resting comfortably at home, I didn’t have a camera on hand on the perfect day. That’s Murphy’s law! ;) But in a very great dolphin style and super generous, guests lent me their cameras, so I was able to take photos of this tour for our blog. Such a great support !!! Dear Belgians, thank you from the bottom of my heart!
