            26.07.2024 – A great day

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on August 3, 2024

The morning offered us a smooth sea and a calm, relaxed atmosphere. Two groups of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) could be observed in different situations. Whilst the first group were actively hunting flying fish, the second group were more relaxed. Both times, however, we had close encounters with these beautiful, lively dolphins. They often approach the boats as if they want to observe the people on board as well as the other way round. Many people remember their encounter with curious Spotted dolphins as the highlight of their vacation. Their playful behaviour and the feeling of being allowed to immerse themselves in their world leave lasting impressions.

Our spotter tried to guide us to a group of Beaked whales, but they dived. According to his information, their dives lasted up to 30 minutes.

Whale watching makes it possible to experience the sea creatures at close quarters. It is important that these activities are carried out responsibly so as not to disturb the animals. This type of nature observation is more than just an attraction; it is an opportunity to experience and appreciate the beauty and diversity of our oceans. Compliance with rules of behaviour and the support of sustainable providers are therefore essential.

On the midday tour, beside Bulwer’s petrels, lots of flying fish, one Mahi Mahi fish and a sea snail that found shelter in the Sargassum seagrass, the cute Rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis) were the starts of the trip.

We also had a wonderful tour in the evening! The Rough-toothed dolphins were still in resting mode and showed our guests how to relax. When we left them and went looking again, one guest spotted a group of Cuvier’s beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris). We were allowed to watch them briefly before they dived into the blue depths. Afterwards, there were Atlantic spotted dolphins and another group of rough-toothed dolphins, which had now refuelled their energy and were hunting. Spectacular flying fish delighted our guests and we got to know a new little captain called Gustav. A good tour!
