Today’s trips were all about Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) — and what a day it was!

Our guests were treated to some fantastic encounters as these energetic dolphins travelled alongside the boat, raced through the waves and played together across the open Atlantic. Watching them move through the water with such speed and energy was an unforgettable experience.

One of the most fascinating things about Atlantic spotted dolphins is how they develop their distinctive spots. They aren’t born covered in spots! Calves are usually born with a much more uniform, greyish appearance. As they grow, their colouring gradually changes and spots begin to appear. Older dolphins can become beautifully covered in spots across their bodies, with individuals often showing different patterns depending on their age.

These spots are one of the features that make Atlantic spotted dolphins so recognisable, and they can give us a clue about the age of the animals we encounter. Seeing dolphins of different ages together also gives us a glimpse into the social nature of these incredible animals, as they travel, play and interact as a group.

Today’s dolphins certainly put on a show, with plenty of fast swimming, bow-riding and playful behaviour around the boat. A day with this many Atlantic spotted dolphins is definitely one we won’t forget anytime soon!
