In the morning, our Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were happily jumping and sought close contact with us a few times. Nice to see these big dolphins interacting with us. The trip continued in search of Sperm Whales (Physeter macrocephalus). They weren’t easy to spot, but Drumond eventually found them. We were able to observe one of these large toothed whales a little closer. While Sperm Whales can be seen off Madeira’s coast all year round, we always see them at intervals. If we have a sighting, the chances of observing them again are high. But when they move west, they’re usually gone for a while. Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) found us on the way back to the marina. That was a nice, active encounter. By the afternoon, however, they had gone much too far out. We had no chance to reach them a second time. But we had our wonderful, magnificent, lively Atlantic spotted dolphins again. It was a beautiful encounter between humans and animals.
