            22.06.2026 – Size and diet

Published by Gemma Stockmans on June 28, 2026
Today’s tours treated our guests to sightings of three incredible cetacean species: the Bryde’s whale (Balaenoptera edeni), the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), and also striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) and the Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis).
Bryde’s whales are large baleen whales that live in warm and tropical oceans around the world. They typically grow to 12–16 meters long and can weigh up to 25 tons.
These whales are filter feeders, using baleen plates instead of teeth to catch food. Their diet mainly consists of small fish such as sardines, anchovies, and mackerel, along with squid and krill. Bryde’s whales are active hunters and often lunge through schools of fish with their mouths open, filtering out large amounts of prey from the water.
Bryde’s whale consumes an estimated 600 to 650 kg food per day.
Their impressive size and feeding habits make them an important part of the ocean ecosystem.
