Today, our island witnessed a marine spectacle – the playful common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and the majestic pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) gracing our azure waters.
Common dolphins, with their distinctive hourglass pattern, treated onlookers to acrobatic displays. Known for their agility, they leaped and spun, showcasing speeds of up to 60 km/h – the true speedsters of the sea.
After seeing them, we were able to found a pod of resting Pilot whales, with bulbous heads and sleek black bodies. They surely added a touch of mystery to this tour. These social creatures, despite their name, belong to the dolphin family and can reach lengths of up to 8.5 meters. Fun Fact: Pilot whales, among the largest oceanic dolphins, navigate the depths with family unity.
This sighting celebrates the diverse marine life beneath our island’s surface. Let’s reflect on the interconnectedness of ocean ecosystems and renew our commitment to their preservation.
Today’s encounter with common dolphins and pilot whales is a reminder of the ocean’s wonders. As we celebrate these moments of natural beauty, let’s pledge to protect and preserve our marine environments, ensuring the magic of the sea endures for generations to come.
