            19.06.2026 – Lobosonda

Published by Gemma Stockmans on June 26, 2026

Today’s tours offered some wonderful wildlife encounters for our guests. During both the morning and afternoon trips, we sighted a Bryde’s whale (Balaenoptera edeni) and bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Guests aboard the Steno tour were also lucky enough to spot Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) , making for a memorable day on the water.

Some guests ask about the meaning behind the name ‘Lobosonda’. The company name originates from two Portuguese words: “Lobos” and “Onda.”
LOBOS comes from the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, which was once home to several monk seals, known in Portuguese as lobos marinhos. Câmara de Lobos also has a special connection to our company, as it is where our vessel Ribeira Brava was rebuilt.
ONDA is the Portuguese word for wave, representing the ocean that is at the heart of everything we do.
Together, these two words reflect our connection to Madeira’s maritime heritage, its marine wildlife, and the Atlantic Ocean that we explore every day.
Thank you to everyone who joined us today. We look forward to welcoming you aboard for more unforgettable encounters at sea.
