Everything was different today. As a jetty is being replaced in the marina, our guests had their introductory speech on board the Ribeira Brava. Heading out into our marine nature, we immediately encountered a school of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). What a gentle, calm, peaceful encounter we had with them. What a blessing that these animals are always willing to interact with us. In addition to the animals’ willingness to get involved with us, the captain’s ability to approach them in a respectful manner is of course also important. Both together result in the perfect mixture.
The Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) were widely scattered, but small sub-groups accompanied the boat. A tiny little calf, a newborn, was brought to the boat by its mother and briefly caught in the bow wave of the Ribeira Brava. Nearing a gestation period of nine months, it appeared to have only arrived at our blue office a few days.
In the afternoon we were allowed to cross the sea with the Atlantic spotted dolphins. The animals were interactive and interested in our bow wave.
