            18.11.2024 – In Their Heads

Published by Peter Worth on November 24, 2024

Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). It’s a funny name though, isn’t it? Why are they called that? Well, it’s all to do with their heads, or more importantly, what’s in their heads. Held in an organ called the spermaceti organ, we find spermaceti. This oil is commonly used by sperm whales to control their bodies in the water. Due to its milky white colour and sticky consistency, however, original whalers thought it may have been something else? What else? Well, Ill let you work that one out in case any young eyes are reading.
