Sometimes our guests ask how far out we have to go to meet whales and dolphins. This is different for each tour. This often has to do with the respective marine mammal species. Some species prefer to be closer to shore, while others need greater depths to forage. Our observation area extends east to Cabo Girão, west to Paul do mar and beyond.
Today we were just out of the harbor when we encountered a small pod of Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). Sometimes it can go that fast. It was a nice observation. The offshore Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), our subsequent sighting, were even closer to land today. However, they were busy hunting around the fish farm. There were a few dynamic leaps.
