Our crew looked out onto a windy ocean early this morning, hoping that our spotter Silviano would find cetaceans despite the conditions. His sharp eyes soon fell upon a pod of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and our team quickly left the harbour, with guests clad in our waterproof clothing. The Stenella searched far and wide for the pod but the increasing wind made tracking the tiny group virtually impossible for our spotter. Suddenly a few smaller dolphins were seen leaping amongst birds, likely Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), and our crew rushed to the area. The sighting was difficult due to the conditions and the evasive behaviour of the dolphins soon prompted us to abandon the sighting.
We were all stoked nonetheless! We were able to see a few Cory’s shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) catching the wind to accelerate in the air and spotted a few Grey Triggerfish (Balistes capriscus). The ride was superbly adventurous and our guests all returned with a salty grin on their faces. Amidst the challenges, our mission was accomplished!
