            14.02.2018 – Basking

Published by Marlene Cabral on February 28, 2018

A calm and sunny day provided us a pleasant tour during both trips, besides having accomplished our objective of finding cetaceans we also saw an adult Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) at surface during our morning trip. This behaviour is frequently observed specially in the first day light. This behavior, or better said, absence of behavior and apparent “apathy” even wen we approach them is called “basking”. Loggerhead sea turtles belong to the Class Reptilia, and like all named reptiles, they are very dependent on outer temperature to regulate their metabolism, such as all cold blooded species….
