Our beautiful island of Madeira is truly a hotspot for whale and dolphin watching. Being part of the macronesian region, that consists of three archipelagos that have a few features in common. They share their volcanic origin, a dissimilar landscape and a pleasant climate. All this has turned out to be an ideal environment for an amazing biodiversity. A richness in food and nutrients aswell as warm are reasons why we have returning visitors over the summer months – the Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis). Being the most curious and friendly dolphin when it comes to encounters, our Snorklers in the morning trip had a great pleasure of observing and listening to them underwater.
We we’re lucky to encounters or favourite Spotties at every of our tours and the morning Ribeira Brava trip even had a special sighting of Blainville beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris). A species that is easily recognized by their tooth reaching out their jaws that overreach the rostrum in male individuals. This species that is names by the Zoologist Henri de Blainville ,only’ gets up to ~4,6m long, but definelty still cannot be mistaken with dolphins with their shy and reserved behavior.
