When we go out, we never know what to expect. Or whether something awaits us. The very best attitude is to stay in tune with what is happening and enjoy what is coming. Today we had a boat full of guests with such an attitude. I am always very happy when our treasures, our friends in the Blue Office are appreciated. I am happy when we share our love for marine mammals. It is good to keep in mind that an encounter with whales and dolphins is not a matter of course, but a gift, every time.
Today we had different groups of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and Short-finned Pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) on all tours. Very nice sightings that were very much enjoyed by our guests. There were small calves with the Pilot whales; another group kept approaching our boat. Bottlenose dolphins, raising their gaze a little to see us.
In the evening we were surprised even more. Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) joined us. But with the message from our spotter, the situation quickly changed. Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) have been discovered far out. At a rapid speed, we left the coast in the hope of meeting these largest of the toothed whales. In fact, there were five Sperm whales out there. We saw how the graceful tail was lifted to plunge into the depths. We had an incredibly wonderful encounter with a Sperm whale calf that dared to approach Stenella when the mother dived. Not only that, but we even heard the codas, the whale communication tones of the calf. How touching it is to watch such a large and yet fragile-looking whale kid. You just want to protect it and keep it safe.
A day that makes it clear that every tour is actually different, new and exciting. A day that shows how important it is to get involved with what is. Nothing was taken for granted, everything was special and a wonderful gift from the sea.
If you want to stand up for our friends of the sea after these wonderful encounters today, please do so on our petition page. This creates a win-win situation.
