Today we sailed across smooth, blue seas in search of marine mammals. The sun accompanied us on our journey. We only encountered Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) at the end of the tour, right in front of the marina. They glided silently and majestically through the transparent blue water. Very beautiful.
But even before that, there were wonderful, exciting marine specialties. A tree trunk disguised itself as a pygmy sperm whale. The simple piece of wood really looked like a resting Kogia. Sailer by the sea’s drifted everywhere on the rolling sea. A welcome, simple meal for a young Loggerhead turtle and a sunfish. Both certainly felt like they were in food paradise today. Small needlefish leaped across the surface in dolphin-like jumps. All these wondrous encounters were truly beautiful little details of the ocean and a reminder of how much there is to discover when you open yourself up to small wonders.
The sunfish, called Mola mola, seems like a silent wanderer of the seas. With its round, almost disc-shaped body, it glides calmly through the depths, as if carrying the serenity of the ocean within it. Despite its enormous size, it feeds mainly on jellyfish and follows the currents between sun and darkness. It often rests near the surface of the water to be cleaned by birds – a gentle giant that shows that strength and calmness are not mutually exclusive.
