            09.04.2022 – Gentle reminder

Published by Paula Thake on April 18, 2022

What a day that began with two wonderful trips on board both our boats this morning. Our guests were lucky to encounter a large group of Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) that included tiny, curious calves that were learning how to hunt from their mothers. An occasional bow-ride is always tempting in between hunting classes and a few approached our boat with their mothers and remained near our boats for some time. Our zodiac moved on to a group of Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) that were far outside the range of our traditional boat, which soon returned to the marina with a dozen smiling faces.

Our afternoon tours were equally delightful! Our first encounter was with an enormous but evasive Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) that surfaced just high enough for us to spot the characteristic white cheek flash that is typical for the species. Our Stenella then sped off to encounter some Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) and a few common dolphins, before both boats concluded their day with a wonderful sighting of pilot whales outside the marina. The day was busy in the most spectacular way and was a gentle reminder of how truly special spring is here in Madeira!
