Northwest winds were picking up fast this morning and our team rushed out on both vessels, determined to find some cetaceans for our guests! The wind near the coast was still relatively weak, giving us a good chance of finding Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) or other coastal water dwellers. Further out, the wind was already quite strong which made the finding by our spotter at sea all the more impressive.
Within the white horses of the waves, our spotter located a pod of Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) heading west. This was good news, particularly for our traditional boat that does not have the same range as our zodiac, and our spotter was able to place both boats close the large toothed whales trajectory. The whales had just returned to the surface after a deep dive and were breathing heavily at the surface, their spouts like faded clouds in the wind. It was a magnificent sighting despite the conditions and lefts us all with salty smiles when we returned to the marina.
