Today, on both of my tours, we had the opportunity to experience a special quality – something that may seem subtle at first glance, yet is, in truth, deeply meaningful. Something that receives far too little space in our often busy and fast-paced lives. Some people find it unfamiliar or even challenging, yet it is of immeasurable value: silence.
Silence is far more than the absence of sound. If we are willing to embrace it, it can become a gateway – to greater presence, deeper awareness, and a more profound connection with the present moment.
This morning, while we waited on a mirror-calm ocean for a Tropical Whale (Balaenoptera edeni) to surface again, such moments of silence naturally emerged. In those moments, we have a choice: Do we become impatient, waiting for the next event to happen? Or do we allow ourselves to simply be, appreciating this precious moment in which nothing needs to be done?
Later in the evening, the Atlantic gifted our group a few more of these valuable moments. A Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta) lifted its head above the water, and for an instant, a meeting of remarkable intensity unfolded – quiet, peaceful, and yet deeply moving. As the boat drifted gently across the blue Atlantic and everyone took a moment to pause, the waves moved the body, and perhaps the silence moved the soul.
Sometimes, it is precisely these quiet moments that stay with us the longest. Not because something spectacular happens, but because, for a brief moment, we are truly present.
