Today on board Stenella at sea, while “Ribeira Brava” is getting the final attention and loving care on dry dock by our maintenance department, while observing a group of Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) we had, occasionally, the company, by air, of some specimens of Northern gannets (Morus bassanus) following the group of dolphins. In the afternoon trip we saw again Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), and had the privilege to witness, the same birds as before, hunting fish together with the dolphins and the Cory’s Shearwater (Calonectris borealis). This seabird has a spectacular technical ability for catching their prey, reaching speeds up to 100km, from the air and entering the water up to 5 meters deep, in order to catch their prey. Very acrobatic and powerful seabirds.

For anyone who has access to UK TV the programme Davina McCall : Life at the Extreme that was on ITV last night and again at 10.40 tonight, is an hour long documentary in the Atlantic around the Azores . Her very close encounter with a sperm whale in the last ten minutes is worth a look.
