(Don’t) bite off more than you can chew!

Published by lobosonda on October 28, 2016
Due of the weather conditions we had to stay on land for a couple of days. Time to answer a few interesting questions!

Often our guests want to know how many marine mammals eat per day. Here are some facts:

            Bottlenose dolphin = 7-10kg

            Sperm whale = 900kg

Humpback whale = up to 1t and more

Blue whale = up to 3,5t

The amount of food baleen whales consume daily seems tremendous. But they feed only for 4-6 months a year, while they are in their feeding grounds. The excessive energy reserves are accumulated in their so-called blubber. During their migration and time in their winter habitats this reserves are going to be depleted.

The food chain is a model of tropic relationships which are perfectly build on each other. Without human impact nature commutes disequilibrium and the balance is maintained. If one module is missing in this sophisticated system, it will have an effect on the rest of the food chain. According to a report from World Ocean Review worldwide one quarter of the edible fish stock is over fished and 30 percent are close to it. To conserve fish stock and marine ecosystem, protection areas, close seasons and a sustainable use of the fish stock is necessary.

We are on top of the food chain, but we are only a part of the major puzzle. The survival of many different species depends on our behavior. It is most important to understand to use our resources moderate and generously give back to nature.
