            14.11.2022 – Non-stop

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on November 21, 2022

Today it really went non-stop. Of course, it’s wonderful. Just out of the harbor, Pedro reported a whale blow. And a few moments later, our guests saw the Tropical Whale (Balaenoptera edeni). We all got a good look at him a couple of times, then we continued. Our spotter had reported Short-fined Pilot Whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus). We found the first group resting. Then we went to a school of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). There were many animals. Scattered here and there were further subgroups of Pilot whales. In the title photo, you can see a Pilot whale holding up its flipper. There are two subgroups of Pilot whales. Long-finned pilot whales prefer colder waters, while Short-finned pilot whales prefer warmer waters. Even if our Pilot whale’s flippers look quite long, it is one of the Short-finned pilot whales. The Long-finned pilot whales are heavily hunted both on the Faeroe Islands and in Tajii/Japan. If you want to support them, you may do so here: https://www.lobosonda.com/whale-watching/marine-protection/
