            25.09.2021 – A colorful group

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on October 1, 2021

The first time is always something special! Today, our colleague Susi saw Blainville beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) and a Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) for the first time. The Beaked whales had done it to her immediately. And who could not fall in love with these magical, rustic animals that look like they come from another era. The majestic Sperm whale was of course extremely impressive. Also, for our guests, an encounter with marine mammals is often a new experience. The amazement, the admiration, the fascination after such contact with free living, wonderful creatures you take home with you. For some guests, it may be the best holiday experience. And that’s what makes us happy. That’s why our job is so special, because we love to share our love for animals with all our hearts.

Today we had a wonderful, colorful group of Blainville beaked whales on our midday tour, as in the evening trip. As can be seen in the photos, they have very different colors of the body and the dorsal fin. The golden color is caused by the coating of algae. The calf was in the group that we have been observing for days. But today the group was bigger. Certainly, at the encounter in the last days, when we only had three animals, some animals had disappeared into the depth to hunt.

On our midday tour, we searched already for the Sperm whales, but unfortunately we did not see them. In the evening, however, it worked out. Breathing heavily, the whale rested on the surface to take in oxygen for the next dive. Then the Sperm whale raised his beautifully curved fluke and slid down with a majestic movement. Impressed guests stayed behind. Such moments show how beautiful creatures coexist with us in this world.
