Today, the guests of the Ribeira Brava had to show a lot of patience. Even if we have a high sighting rate for both boats, everything depends on whether there are marine mammals in our blue office. Fortunately, a trip on our traditional fishing boat is a pleasure in itself. You can just relax and let yourself swing over the sea. Being at sea gives our guests the chance to see their vacation island from a different perspective. Where is Funchal, where is Ponta do Sol or Jardim do mar? Where is our holiday accommodation? Definitely a completely different perspective.
In the end, we were lucky, because a Blainville beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris) appeared. It wasn’t tight and could only be seen briefly, but it still proved that we can have hope of seeing marine mammals until we go into the harbor.
Incidentally, Blainville’s beaked whales got their name from the French zoologist who described this whale species based on the jawbone in 1817.
