            31.10.2019 – Wild gang

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on November 5, 2019

Thank you Filipe Eagle Eye! This was the motto of our tour this morning! Filipe discovered two Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) and two Baleen whales in the moving sea!

Due to the shape of the dorsal fin, we assume that it was two Finback whales (Balaenoptera physalus), mom and calf. These whales are the second largest animal on our planet. They are getting about 100 years old. Consider how much whale shit they produce in their lifespan, how much nutrients this represents for the phytoplankton, which is responsible for our oxygen supply. As a small thank you for this service and our encounter with these animals, please remember to sign the petition against whaling.

At Lobosonda the spotter principle is great support at sea. This concept of land-based search ensures a higher sighting rate of marine mammals. A promising method. But of course, that does not mean that the crew onboard does not search as well. And our captain Filipe has eagle eyes, which he proved once more today.

In the afternoon, the principle of adaptation was applied. Our Ribeira Brava has worked its way through many, many, wild, whirling waves. But around the boat was as well in a different way very lively, because many, many, agile – wild Spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) caused absolute joy and excitement. What a wonderful activity! Incredibly many little calves who jumped to the bet. Everyone seemed to test their own style. Tails were thrown up, adults sprinted through the blue. And many swam in love rush belly to belly. What a wild gang! It was great! And to our delight, at the end of this tour, we also heard the comment: “An experience that I’ll never forget!” Wonderful, that’s the way it should be! 🙂
