22.06.2019 – The ones who danced with the whale

Published by Marlene Cabral on June 30, 2019

Fantastic! Great! Out of the ordinary! Beautiful! Unique! Charming! Majestic! Breathtaking! Perfect! Spectacular! Grateful! … and I could find a hundred other words for our morning tour. How were we all gifted!

Out we went on a calm sea. There was a touch of perfection in the air. Such a unique adventure on the Ribeira Brava on this perfect Saturday morning. What we experienced then, was just great! At the start, there was a rushing group of Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), who let themselves be pushed forward by the thrust of the boat. A popular dolphins hobby, bow wave surfing. A beautiful encounter with these little marine mammals!

On the way to another dolphin group, however, something came in between, something BIG! A fantastic Tropical whale (Balaenoptera edeni) who gave us the out of the ordinary gift of a dance card. And so it really was, this whale danced in bows and curves around the boat! He dived belly up under our fishing boat. He pulled past our side of the boat, turned around, showed us his belly, we saw his grooves and even the eye. A picture, which we will all definitely see forever in our mind’s eye. An experience that is carried home in the heart. Anyone who once sees a whale dancing for themselves, will stay forever touched, I am absolutely sure of that. What a serenity this majestic animal radiated. It was a breathtaking dance of elegance, peace, curiosity, serenity and lightness. At heart we all danced with this absolutely spectacular creature of the Atlantic! Or were we the ones who danced with the whale? Is that true?!!! For this whale a second name has now been found! Tropical whale or “OUR BEST WHALE”!

Also in the afternoon our guests had the pleasure meeting again the Common dolphins and whales. In any case, a Tropical whale was there and apparently he has also shown here very interactive. With this group he was given the name “Bob”. So the name is now fixed: “Bob, OUR BEST Whale!” 🙂
On our way to the harbor we met some charming Atlantic Spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), who were in love with each other;)

And please remember to sign the petition against whaling (as well as the other petitions;)). Our petitions can be found at Whale Watching – Marine Protection.

How grateful, how grateful, how grateful for the being with these wonderful marine mammals!
