Today the wind of tomorrow arrived a bit premature in front of Calheta. What from land looked like a smooth sea turned, further out, a bit more undulating out. But everything stayed in the green zone and we had an exciting, energetic sighting with powerful Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Not only that, it was the off-shore form of this dolphin species that only occasionally visits us here and puts down a proper power show every time. The animals enjoyed themselves with surfing, high leaps and they visited us to surf in the bow wave.
Twice we saw Flying fish (Cheilopogon melanurus) sailing over the waves. Actually, it deserves the name “Gliding fish”. They catapult themselves with momentum out of the water and into the gliding flight. In this elegant way they sail up to 200-300m, sometimes even 400m above the sea surface. Depending on the species they have two to four widened, wing like fins. Incidentally, forty species of flying fish live in our World Oceans.
A marvelous morning adventure!
In the evening we went out with the Stenella. We quickly met Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). Actually, it would be more correct to say they found us. A large school of dolphins swept across the sea. They were everywhere and we were right in the middle! What a force, what a beauty! It almost could not get better but there was still a better surprise in great shape … two Tropical whales (Balaenoptera edeni)! One of these two, approached us closely.
A marvelous evening adventure!
