Today was another unforgettable day out on the Atlantic, with encounters that reminded us once again just how incredible the marine life around Madeira can be.
Our morning and afternoon trips brought us face-to-face with sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and lively Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis).
Sperm whales are truly magnificent animals. They are the largest of the toothed whales, with enormous heads that can make up around a third of their total body length. Their powerful, compact bodies and characteristic blows make them unmistakable when they surface.
One of the most fascinating moments comes when a sperm whale prepares to dive. As its huge body disappears beneath the surface, it leaves behind what is often called a “footprint” — a smooth, flattened patch of ocean where the waves seem to suddenly disappear. This happens because the whale’s movement and the disturbance it creates beneath the surface temporarily smooth the water. Seeing that calm patch marking the place where such a giant has just vanished beneath the waves is a magical sight.
Alongside the sperm whales, the Atlantic spotted dolphins brought plenty of energy to both trips. Their playful nature and characteristic spotted patterns make every encounter special, and seeing them sharing the open ocean with these enormous whales is a wonderful reminder of the diversity of life beneath the surface.
Seeing these magnificent giants twice in one day made for another truly memorable day on the Atlantic. We can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
