Today, only the Steno had the opportunity to head out in the morning. Unfortunately, weather conditions prevented the Ribeira Brava from departing, and later in the day the afternoon Steno tour was also cancelled.
Although conditions on land appeared relatively calm during the morning, both our spotter and captain could already see that the strong winds would become a problem. As the day progressed, the wind intensified and the sea became increasingly choppy, making it unsafe for both the Ribeira Brava and the afternoon Steno tour to operate.
The guests who joined the morning Steno excursion certainly experienced a challenging ride out at sea. Despite the rough conditions, they were rewarded with an unforgettable sighting of a magnificent sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus). Seeing one of these incredible animals in its natural habitat made the trip a memorable experience and a highlight of the day.
While we were unfortunate with the weather, we are grateful that the morning tour was able to go ahead and provide such a special encounter. We hope for calmer seas and better conditions in the coming days.
