Today’s tours brought a variety of memorable encounters at sea, including sightings of several dolphin species and a young Loggerhead turtle enjoying the calm conditions at the surface. The pleasant weather and active marine life made for rewarding trips for both guests and crew alike.
Working as a guide in Madeira involves many different responsibilities. In addition to ensuring guests’ well-being during tours, guides also contribute to the collection of scientific data and photographic documentation throughout each excursion. The role also requires knowledge of the region’s marine wildlife, including the habitat use and behaviour of 27 cetacean species as well as other marine animals found in Madeira’s waters. Team members continuously expand their knowledge through workshops and collaboration with local scientists and researchers.
This morning’s tour was also a special occasion for our team, as Gemma joined us on the water for her first guided trip following her onboarding process. With previous marine experience and a strong interest in learning, she settled in well and enjoyed the morning alongside our guests and crew.
During the excursions, we encountered Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), both well-known seasonal visitors to Madeira’s waters. Their curious nature often allows for excellent viewing opportunities and photographs. We were also fortunate to spot a young Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) resting near the surface.
We are happy to have Gemma as part of the team and look forward to many more days at sea together.
