            26.03.2026 – Marine Kindergarten

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on April 1, 2026

Dolphins display pronounced social behavior in the ocean, which includes the care and development of their young. In this context, the term “kindergarten” is used to describe group formations of mothers with their calves. While the mothers are hunting or resting, the young often remain close to one another. During this time, they develop important skills such as coordination, communication, and social interaction. Playful behavior, such as chasing one another or jumping, contributes to their physical and mental development. The females keep an eye on their young and intervene when necessary.

Today, we observed such a nursery of Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) on both the morning and the midday tour. Seeing the small, lively dolphins is always something very special.
