It has been a quiet day with only bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) about. The quite large group encountered in the morning was especially fun and interactive. They were readily bow-riding both of our vessels and we had a few fantastic leaps. One individual even did some spyhopping, checking us out for a good moment.
The very last tour of the day ended with no cetacean sightings. While our spotter did great work finding some animals for us, they were gone by the time we arrived in at the locations. We made a lot of distance, searching all along the island’s south coast with our skipper Daniel keeping an eye out from the roof at times, yet no luck. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a high diversity of cetaceans around Madeira with an often very busy ocean. However, there will be some days the animals go elsewhere and out of sight which makes the days we do see them even more magical. As my first no sightings tour, this tour was definitely special. Our guests seemed to have a good time too, with some flying fish (Cheilopogon melanurus) races, speedy driving and loads of sea birds in front of the stunning landscape of Madeira. Even with no sightings – doughnuts are fun!
