26.02.2024 – Marvels and Concerns Beneath the Waves

Today, our ocean adventure took us on a journey beyond imagination, where every wave held a story and every creature a marvel. As we set sail, little did we know that the ocean would unfold its secrets before our very eyes, revealing both wonders and concerns lurking beneath the surface.

Our first encounter left us in awe as we spotted the majestic Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus), their sleek forms gliding effortlessly through the azure expanse. They were a sight to behold, a reminder of the grace and power that resides within the ocean’s depths.

But amidst the splendour, a pang of concern gripped our hearts when we stumbled upon a scene of distress—a Blue shark (Prionace glauca) swimming erratically, bearing the scars of human interaction. Clear vessel cuts marred her once-pristine skin, a stark reminder of the impact of our presence on these magnificent creatures.

As we approached, our hearts sank further upon realizing she was a female. The realization that her injuries may impact not only her life but also the potential for future generations struck a chord deep within us. Blue sharks play a vital role in maintaining the delicate balance of marine ecosystems, their presence crucial for regulating prey populations and ensuring the health of the ocean.

This encounter served as a poignant reminder of the importance of shark conservation efforts. It’s not just about preserving a single species; it’s about safeguarding the intricate web of life that relies on these apex predators. Every shark lost to human activity represents a threat to the stability of our oceans—a reality we cannot afford to ignore.

Amidst these sobering thoughts, moments of joy emerged as we encountered Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) frolicking in the waves. Their playful antics offered a fleeting respite from the weight of our observations, a reminder of the resilience and beauty that still thrives within our oceans.

As we bid farewell to the sea for today, our hearts are heavy with the knowledge of the challenges that lie ahead.
