            17.11.2023 – Glimpse

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on November 24, 2023

Cuvier’s beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) are fascinating animals. They are perfectly adapted to the depths of the sea, after all they are able to dive down to 3000 m. They prefer deep pelagic waters along continental slopes and steep underwater geological features such as banks, seamounts and submarine canyons. Using their ventral throat furrows, they are able to create a vacuum in their mouth, which enables them to specifically suck in their prey.

Although we would have liked to show our guests these special marine mammals in more detail, they only appeared briefly and then disappeared on their next 25-minute dive.
