Embarking on our maritime expedition today in Madeira, we were bestowed with an awe-inspiring spectacle of marine life, a true testament to the wonders that lie beneath the ocean’s surface. Under the spotlight were the enchanting Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Their playful leaps and whimsical water dances captivated our senses, showcasing the intelligence and exuberance that define these marvellous marine creatures. They even had a calf with them, but we are still not sure if it is the same species! As you read this we are discussing this with other scientist in the island, and will soon write about it.
Following this lively performance, the ocean unveiled the elusive Blainville’s Beaked (Mesoplodon densirostris). These deep-sea navigators graced us with glimpses of their mysterious world, reminding us of the intricate and fascinating ecosystems hidden below the waves.
Capping off our nautical adventure were the elegant Risso’s Dolphins (Grampus griseus), with their distinctive markings and graceful movements. Their presence added a touch of elegance to our seafaring odyssey, leaving us in wonder at the diversity that thrives in Madeira’s marine realm.
This oceanic rendezvous not only stirred our appreciation for the natural world but also fueled our commitment to marine conservation. Here’s to the magic of the sea, the dance of dolphins, and the grandeur of whales – a testament to the boundless beauty beneath the waves.
